Food Security and School Readiness

Hunger affects people all over our province – including many in your community. We all know that it’s hard to focus when you’re hungry. Sadly, when children are hungry, they struggle.

Tackling School Hunger: Paving the Way for Success from K to Grade 3

For young learners, having access to nutritious food is essential to their ability to focus, learn, and thrive in school. When students come to school hungry, it can affect everything from their concentration in class to their overall health. That’s why addressing school hunger is a critical step in setting children up for success.

In the formative years from Kindergarten to Grade 3, children are developing key literacy, math, and social skills. Proper nutrition fuels their brains and bodies, helping them engage with their lessons and build strong foundations for future learning. When hunger is no longer a barrier, kids can focus better, participate more in class, and feel more confident in their abilities.

Programs that provide healthy meals and snacks at school not only help improve academic outcomes but also promote overall well-being. They create an environment where all students can start their day ready to learn, leading to better attendance, improved behavior, and higher achievement—critical elements in helping young children succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Community Driven Solutions

Addressing child hunger will take a cross-sector approach.  United Way works with those uniquely positioned to drive forward a collaborative, community-driven approach that focuses on long-term sustainable solutions rather than quick fixes.
