A 30-hour summer experience to build strong foundational literacy skills in struggling early readers

  • Recognize the diverse cultural backgrounds of the campers as a strength
  • Recognize, include and welcome families, local Knowledge Keepers and local resources as guests to demonstrate and affirm diversity
  • Utilize wholistic approaches in all domains – cognitive, spiritual, emotional and physical
  • Create culturally rich learning environments that support all children to see and appreciate diversity around them

  • Use observation and data to build awareness of children’s needs
  • Understand and recognize potential triggers
  • Create safe, trusting and supportive learning environments
  • Be prepared to respond when a child needs extra support, recognize when specialized resources are needed

Comprehension

  • Confirm that all children have mastered concepts about print
  • Reinforce mastery of phonemic awareness skills – rhyming, alliteration, substitution
  • Support and guide transition from de-coding, re-coding and en-coding
  • Reinforce mastery of safety and self-identification words and numbers – name, caregiver names, contacts, emergency

Foundational SKill
Building

  • Expand skills through sharing engaging books and stories
  • Utilize simply written books to engage children in reading
  • Promote opportunities for children to build vocabulary through supportive interactions
  • Encourage conversations and interactions with books in the home
